THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN TRADITIONAL SCREW IMPLANTS AND BASAL IMPLANTS
Immediate loading is one of the basic principles of treatment with basal implants.
This is possible due to the morphology of selected basal implants
The transmission of masticatory loads into the cortical regions of the jaw bone preferably far away from the area of possible bacterial attack.
The basal implants do not primarily utilise sponges bone areas for load transmission unlike the traditional screw implants.
It is not necessary for these implants to be in contact with the spongeous bone even in a long term functioning as they take support from the cortical bone.
For these reasons selected basal implants are suited for trans- sinusal placement as well as for placement through the hollow cavity of osteoporotic distal mandible, as well as for placement through extraction sockets and in regions of very less bone height.
The vertical part does not transmit masticatory forces (except lateral loads) hence the function of the implants as a whole is not endangered.
The basal implants are designed to the necessities, such as:
1. Avoiding fractures by having an adequate thickness
2. Being thin enough to allow insertion through narrow vertical slots which heal fast
3. Preventing peri- implantitis (infection) through its smooth surface. This feature allows placement in the sinus area as well as into the extraction sockets.
